A Dip in the Ocean — Behind the Curtain

Protocol::SecurityBreach.OPS
Classification::Level-11
Location::Genetique.Underwater-Station.47
Date::March-7-2074
DeploymentStatus::Debrief

Summary::Special Ops Team Jaguar-Seven was deployed to a report of a possible security breach in an underwater research facility of Aztechnology subsidiary Genetique, station 47. No communication has been received in 20 hours and hails are unresponsive. Protocol dictates investigation with Ops Team. Team Lead Echo-1 reporting for debriefing.

Report::We responded to the call within 20 mins of the report and was wet with 4 hours. Deployed via airdrop submarine. Enroute to facility, sonar picked up the silhouette of another submersible. However, upon inspection, it appeared to be the shadow of a whale or another anomaly and no vehicle was found. Jaguar-Seven was deployed in the intake bay of the facility while the sub patrolled. Immediately upon insertion, we found numerous bodies of the facilities employees. It appeared, upon inspection, that they may have been Infected. However, they were killed with bullets and blades that were suspicious. Further inspection of the facility resulted in numerous contacts with other Infected employees that resulted in their elimination.

Encountered Dr Simon Talbott, head researcher on site and he too has turned Infected. However, due to his strain of HMHVV, he turned into a vampire. We subdued him and are currently holding him in a secure facility. His grasp on magic and Infected may prove useful for the future.

Investigation of the data breach is ongoing. The device prototype is missing, along with research material that was stored on the research host. Mainframe systems were destroyed. Facility systems are still intact. Security footage has been acquired and being reviewed by investigators. Host access logs show the breach at 12:10pm. Internal Countermeasures were launched, however, the intruder left the host before IC could be effective. Cleaning team has been dispatched to the location.

Session 5 – A Dip in the Ocean

Cast of Characters:

  • Rae
  • Eternal
  • Mutt
  • Bowjack
  • Walker
  • Tatters

“I contacted the group for another run. Eventhough they failed the last run I gave them, I have confidence that they would bounce back on their feet. They are still pretty new to the game and still getting used to each other. Hell, even I had a failed run or two in my time. This one is pretty straight forward. They were hired to infiltrate an offshore research lab and steal a prototype and research data, eliminate any threats and destroy the research mainframe. Pretty simple, get in … grab the drek …. shoot it up …. get out. They already had transportation set up to go to the facility, so that was a plus. When they got their, the sub driver dropped them off and asked to be radioed when they are ready to be picked up. When they started looking around the dock floor and intake offices, they learned that this facility is for Genetique, which is a subsidiary of Aztechnology. Then they were suddenly attacked by ravenous ghouls in lab coats. Now something must be wrong, unless the Azzies have started employing the Infected. But back to the story, they were able to fend off the ghouls successfully with only moderate complications. During the fight, it seems that Eternal and Mutt started to one-up each other, which continued into the rest of the run.

They found where the data center with the research lab was located and took the secure elevator, after using one of the ghouls’ employee ID tags, to the correct floor. As they made their way to the secure data center room, a pair of hell hounds engaged them. Now this is to be expected with Azzie security. In my experience, they have usually used trained paranormal creatures as security. The pair got the jump on Bowjack before Eternal and Mutt made quick work of them. I have heard of a video of Bowjack’s reaction to the attack and its said to be hilarious and set to a favorite tune of mine from the 5th world.

Once they cleared the secure door to get in the data center, Tatters went to work with hacking into the computer to extract the information. This was done fairly quickly and efficiently and from whispers it sounds like he got alot of paydata as well! He unlocked and extracted the prototype cyberwear, an fist sized egg shaped implant. Eternal made quick work of destroying the mainframe and the team decided on what to do next. This is when they got a call from the sub driver that there is another sub, likely a threat response team, on its way. The team decided that the job was completed, so they extracted out and finished up the job. All in all, I would say that it was a pretty good run. Since I currently have jobs coming out the ears, I plugged them in for another one right away.”

That One Time We Did That One Thing

Here I am again. Reminiscing of the past. There was a NewsNet story about the 15 year anniversary of the Year of the Comet. My gosh, has it been that long …. My mind goes back to a run that I was on. It was just Scarecrow and I and the job was to eliminate a ranking member of the the CAS Senate. The intelligence we had was that he was going to be in his vacation home in Talledega. We set up the plans to hit him there. He was supposed to be alone, so a milk run right? It was so far from a milk run. The cabin was set back in the burbs and sorta away from the main sprawl. It was a quaint little wooden cabin that looked like it was pulled out of a Norman Rockwell painting. When we got there and set up, the fragger had his security team with him. “Drek ….” I thought to myself. Scarecrow and I were not prepared for this …

I called in some assistance by the name of Bulldozer. This was a 9ft tall cybered up troll that we called on when we needed in sticky situations. We decided to use a diversion and set fire to the parked nearby cars. The subsequent explosions drew out the security team. The ambush we set up worked like a charm and the team was eliminated … so we thought. Out of nowhere, a couple of spirits pounced on Bulldozer. Before our eyes and before we could even act, the spirits tore the troll to pieces. I called up some spirits of my own and started slinging spells at them. Scarecrow stormed the house and subdued our mark. After I was done with the spirits, I sped off into the house as well. Just as I entered the doorway, I caught glimpse of the mage that was about to take out Scarecrow. I threw up a mana barrier between them to stop the spell. The mage then turned on me with a powerful lightning bolt that hit me square on the arm. I went down twitching and yelling profanities. This gave Scarecrow enough time to put a bullet grouping right in the chest with his Predator.

I caught a glimpse of a lump of flesh nearby, but then passed out. I could hear Scarecrow running to me with a medkit and the sounds of him telling me to hold on while he patched me up. I woke up in the truck some time later and my wounds were field dressed. I reached over to scratch my arm and it wasnt there … What the FRAG! … That fucking mage took my arm. I asked Scarecrow what happened. He said he finished the job and then evac’d us the hell out of there. “What the frag happened to my arm!” I asked. “Its dead Aspen, its dead” he replied. When we got back from the job, I had a new fancy cyberarm installed. At first, it was difficult to deal with. Eventually, I was able to gain full use of it. I was even able to integrate using my magic with it.

I snapped back from the memory rubbing my arm. I thought of Scarecrow and placed a call to him. It has been too long since I talked to my old friend. We set up a time to meet at the Taco Stand for lunch. I hung up the commlink and thought “It has been way to long since I talked to my old friend“. I reached for the whiskey bottle and poured a drink. “To you Bulldozer …” and took the shot.

A Meeting Takes Place …. — Behind the Curtain

The view is a bit foggy at first. You catch the glimpse of a chrome plated cyberarm with intricate glyphs and symbols etched into it. Its resting on a fancy wooden desk with an electronic notepad. On the notepad, there seems to be a program running with flickering spreadsheets and command line scripts running. Around the small room are bookshelves, chairs and a few potted plants and a picture on the desk. You try to focus on the picture, but a knock at the door commands your attention. “Enter“, you hear coming from the person at the desk. In walks an elf standing over 6ft high, medium build and wearing military fatigues. His long hair is pulled back in a ponytail and covered by a hat. As he approaches, you catch an insignia that denotes he is (or is portraying to be) a Ghost. The insignia of the highly specialized and trained special forces unit of the Tir Peace Force is well known among the shadows. “Daytona … What have you for me today?” As the elf sits down in the chair on the other side of the desk, you notice that the elf’s left eye is a cyber implant.

You asked me to keep an eye on that last job, right. Well I was watching the hideout, some little birdies I have informed me that there was a shadowrunning team that was looking into the kidnapping of a little girl. I thought to myself on how many kidnapped little girls there could be in Cara’sir and knew that they had to be talking about this one.” He pauses while he takes a drink from a canteen. “Sure as drek, the shadowrunners shows up at the shack and take the girl back. They did it with a quickness too, your guys didnt stand a chance against them.

Why didnt you stop them, dammmit!

That wasnt what I was paid to do. You paid me to keep an eye on it and gather information and that is what I did! However, I did have a little fun with them to keep them on their toes. As they were leaving, I popped a shot off. I got it to shave the nosehairs of one of them runners. He nearly drekked himself in his hurry to leave … crying out about hurting his truck and drek. Laughed my ass off on that one.

Well did you get what you were PAID to do then?

Affirmative … passing the file as soon as I get the creds

You see the cyberarm pick up the notebook and some commands are rattled on it, catching a passing glimpse of a sizable number.

Done … 90,000 nuyen sent.

On the same notebook, you see a file arrive.

This is all the information that you were able to gather?

Yes” the elf says as he stands, takes another drink off the canteen and leaves the room without another word.

Looking back at the file, it appears to be a series of pictures and text files. One of the files has a couple of images associated with it. The first image is that of a tall well built elf with short brown hair and green eyes. He is standing next to an Ares Roadmaster. The other image is that of a good looking petite female elf standing outside of a building. One the building is a partial banner over the doorway. “Celebrat ….” Switching to the text file it appears with a name …. Felicia Anchen Owner/Proprietor of Celebrate It! Event Planning. Switching files, another set comes of images and text files show up. This one is a tall human with slicked back red hair, close shaved beard and …. orange eyes? A small tattoo is seen hiding behind his jacket collar of what looks to be a black cat. The other picture is that of a rather pale human woman with black, short cut hair and deep blue eyes. This one also has a text file associated with it. The name on this one is Lith Felin Owner/Proprietor of The Bolthole. Going back to the file list, there are multiple other files and photos.

Putting the notepad down, a slow giggle is heard. “These … shadowrunners … these …. cockroaches are starting to piss me off. They will soon learn not to frag with me.” He picks up a commlink. “LIFT! GET YOUR ASS IN HERE! We have work to do” …. As the sight of a large oversized ork walks into the room, everything fades to black. Your left with an ominous feeling of dread and apprehension.

Session 4 – Into the Wilderness

Cast of Characters:

  • Rae
  • Eternal
  • Mutt
  • Bowjack
  • Walker
  • Tatters
  • Draken

“I received word that the team got a line on a job that requires them to take a little trip into the wilderness. Rumor has it, its to do a little reagent poaching on a tract of land that is owned by Prince Zincan. The Johnson, in this case, is a talismonger that has a shop out in Sandy. Lindsey Crow Feather already had a pair of muscles for the job, but wanted a little more insurance. The negotiation was simple, 8k each, plus an additional payment for each reagent gathered. Her associate, Belson, would be their guide through the wilderness. A squat, overweight balding, middle aged human man, Belson is a licensed guide, hunter and tracker. The team was given a short list of the reagents to gather and left in Belson’s RV. The list was short and simple.

Griffon’s Beak
Silver Moss
Golden Boar Tusk
Werewolf Fur

The team made their way into the Seren’diol National Park and set up base camp on the edge of the park. They unloaded the Growlers. Belson already scouted out locations on where they can harvest the reagents and posted them on an AR map. The Matrix doesnt exist out in this region, so the wireless functionality is NULL at best. The team decided on going for the griffon’s beak first. There was a nest of griffons that are about a 4 hours ride through rough terrain to the cliff face where the nest is located. After a rough climb up the cliff, the party came face to face with four griffons. There was a little snafu with the giant, known as Draken, and stumbling over a rock. The giant found himself with two of the griffon’s beaks where … well where they shouldnt be. As the rest of the team made their way over the ledge, they made quick work of the griffons. Belson went to work harvesting the beaks and the team found a stash of a pair of giffon’s eggs.

The next stop was going after the silver moss. There was a grove nearby that had an abundance of it, but it was inhabited by some aggressive awakened monkeys. Belson only needed cover while he gathered the moss. It would take about a half hour or so to gather up and prepare the moss. In the meantime, the party was pelted by small stones, sticks and handfuls of feces. The brunt of which was targeted on Rae. The team took pot shots at the monkeys and bought Belson the time he needed to gather a good amount of moss.

The next item on the list was the werewolf fur and the team decided to act that night. There was a mated pair that took up shelter in an old abandoned hunting cabin. The team did a little recon on the cabin and watched as they moved about the cabin. Walker caught sight of a totem that one of them was wearing that identified her as another follower of Wolf. As everyone started to plan, Eternal decides to charge the cabin and tosses in a tear gas grenade. This caught the team by surprise, but after a moment or two, they were able to compose themselves and take up positions around the cabin. As the battle started, Draken took the full brunt of a stunbolt spell that knocked him unconscious. They two invisible werewolves burst out of the cabin, one of them disoriented from the tear gas and flashbangs, was taken down by Mutt. Tatters caught a glimpse of a figure by a tree. The branch that she stepped on gave her position away. He shot a burst from his smg, but only hit dirt and tree. He shouted out to the others and Walker was able to pin point her location astrally. He hit her with a lightning bolt spell and she goes down. Eternal took out the other werewolf with some handy swordwork. However, the werewolf magician had another spell to let loose. The stunbolt was unleashed on Walker, but he was able to dodge it. Unfortunately, the spell was so powerful, the drain killed its caster. Moments later, the ghostly form of Wolf appears to Walker, silently judging him. A few moments later, Wolf turns and walks away into nothingness.

The last and final of the reagents is the golden boar tusks. Belson asked that the team not kill this boar, only subdue it so that he can harvest the tusks. The boar is an awakened creature that has the ability to regenerate its wounds and will grow the tusks back. The team tracks down the boar and Mutt subdues and holds it while the tusks are harvested. The boar was released unharmed and tuskless back into the wilderness.

With all the reagents in hand, plus a pair of griffon’s eggs, the team heads back to civilization and gets paid, plus a bonus for the eggs. It was good to see that they were able to pick themselves back up after the previous failure. The team now gets some time off for retrospective inspection as they prepare for the future.”

“A sports friend of mine got me in touch with me about an acquaintance. Shadowrunning and sports have gone hand in hand since the leagues have passed the Denver Agreement. With that agreement, teams are forbidden to interfere with the acquisition of talent. Hence, shadowrunning became an avenue of circumventing the agreement. Now, I have done runs for and against other teams, so I am familiar with these kinds of runs. I agreed to me with him. After discussing the details of what was needed, I decided to throw the green team on it. They need something a little different and could learn from this run. I set up the meet with the Johnson and the team. I decided to include a couple of new people to help round the team out as well. The job was to keep an eye on a young recruit for the Paladins basketball team. He is scheduled to be in town for 3 days while the Paladins court him. It was almost assured that other teams would want to interfere with this kid, so this was going to be a tough one. Both the team and Johnson agreed to the terms and they went off.

What fraggin surprised me is that the team lost the kid on the first day and he was extracted by another runner team. They did good while the kid arrived at the airport and through the hotel. They found about the other runner team and some of their capabilities and thought out of the box to keep an eye on him. They were also able to keep on the mark in the hotel room and on the way to dinner. He had a dinner meet with some of the team management when all hell broke loose. Half the team was watching the mark and the other half was watching the hotel. Both were hit with violence at about the same time. Walker and Sapper were watching the hotel when they found out that the other running team’s decker was doing the same. They were assaulted by a pair of drones. At the restaurant, a couple that was having dinner opened fire on another table of dinner guests. The situation was handled quickly by Mutt and they lost the mark in all of the commotion. The were able to pick up the trail again after remembering the vehicle was tagged. They found it was ran off the road and two of the four bodyguards were dead. The mark was nowhere to be found.

I have had my share of failed runs in my time, and in a way, its good that the team have gotten on under their belt. The need to shake this off and get back on the horse. From my understanding they have another run lined up now. Hopefully they can get a successful run back under them.”

Session 2 (part 2) — A Child Lost

Cast of Characters:

  • Rae
  • Sapper
  • Skitz
  • Bowjack
  • Walker

“So the story goes that the group made a run on the apartments in Sandy. It ended up being a ruse. Rae and Bowjack were the first ones in and, from what I hear, Bowjack to the brunt of a 3 round burst to the chest and dropped. However, the rest of the group was able to make short work of the four gangers that were posted up here. All the commlinks that were showing were dummies. The camera showing Zoe with her captors had a picture stuck to it to make it appear that they were there. Throughout the complex, there was no sign of Zoe.

However, what nobody expected was the Shooters were also on the lookout for Zoe. Apparently Rae had made an impression on Susan and she sent out word on her network. They found that Zoe was being held in a shack in Gladstone down by the falls. No charge for this information, but the team owes her a favor now. The quickly moved on the new location. Sapper “acquired” or “liberated” the open bed Bulldog that was at the apartments for himself, so both vehicles descended on it. A quick plan was put together to draw out the two posted gangers and dispatch them quickly. The plan went off without a hitch and Zoe was rescued unhurt. We made plans to meet up at my favorite taco stand with Joanne and the switch was made. This team might just be ready for some bigger jobs that are starting to come in.”

A Child Lost — Behind the Curtain

It was a rainy day .. again. “Frag, I hate rain” Zoe thought to herself as she left the shelter of the high school doorway and ran for the Ford Americar that had pulled up. Her ride was running late again. “Drek … I bet he was late because he was at the Stuffer Shack eating tacos again. 100 nuyen that he has hot sauce stains on his shirt again.” Steven Brenson wasnt that bad of a person. A little overweight, but he genuinely cared about Zoe and has been her bodyguard for nearly 5 years now. Steven was a former Ghost, but the last few years of eating tacos and not training like he used to has put a few extra pounds on his elf frame. He kept the car running and opened the door as Zoe ran and jumped in the back seat. After Steven got back in, she noticed that Carl was also with her. Nothing new really, but Carl seemed to have the ability to have people just not notice him. “I hate this fraggin rain!” I exclaimed. “Why does it always rain in the Tir?” With a chuckle, Steven puts the car in gear and head out for home. Zoe went online on her commlink and did her usual thing as they made their way down the winding roads of the West Slope.

From out of nowhere, Zoe is ripped from the various feeds she watching as the car hits the ditch and slams into a tree. Carl and Steven both look back “ARE YOU OK??” Doing a quick glance around, I nodded yes. “Stay Here!” They both drew the predators they kept in their holsters and stepped out of the car. Gunfire erupts and Steven falls back into the drivers seat, his shirt bloody from multiple gunshot wounds. I let out a scream as he pointed his predator at me and fired. I closed my eyes, but when I opened them, there was a dead ork at my window. I looked back at Steven and his eyes were glazed over. He was dead. I screamed as the door opened and ork hands grabbed and ripped me out of the car. I stumbled onto the street and fell next to the body of Carl. The orks tried to grab me again, but this time I was quick enough to grab the predator and squeeze a shot off. One of the orks went down, but the others grabbed me by the arms. The one I shot stood up straighter, walked over and backhanded me … hard. The last thing I remember was falling down and everything going black. Steven … Carl … fragging rain

When I awoke next, everything was dark … wait, what am I wearing? Looking around, there is just darkness, but I can feel a hood or sack over my head. The hood was removed and bright lights assaulted my eyes. “MOM!…. MOM!” I screamed. “What the do you want! … MOM!” Out of nowhere, one of them smacked me across the face … hard. I waited a moment to let my eyes adjust to the lighting. “Shut the frag up and read the cards!” He screamed. Another man, also an ork it looks like, held up cards for me to read. Wait was that a camera? Quickly scanning over it, it was a message for my mom …

Judge Joanne Gibson, you are unlawfully holding a brother in arms and currently presiding over his trial. These charges are drek and brought on by false evidence that was provided by corrupt Peace Force operatives. Currently, the trial is scheduled to end on February 14th. If he is found guilty, the trial is delayed for any reason, or you involve the Peace Force in any way … your precious daughter will be returned to you in … pieces … MOM!

The big ork reached out again and smacked me with his cyberarm. Frag man, no wonder it hurt. The other ork said just past the camera “If you ever want to see your daughter alive again, you will find Bobby Jones not guilty on all charges.” What the hell??? I started crying for my mom and screaming and yelling. But the put the bag over my head again. I felt the brunt of a hard object hit me upside my head again … then darkness …

Session 2 (part 1) — A Child Lost

Cast of Characters:

  • Sapper
  • Skitz

  • Walker

I got a frantic call last night from an old friend. Joanne was a friend from back in my running days. Her daughter, Zoe, was kidnapped and she received a video from the kidnappers. After I was able to calm her down and assessed the situation, it sounded like this needed some intervention from the shadows. Joanne agreed, but she didnt want anything traced back to her on this. She needed to keep it clean. I said that I would handle it and would pay for it out of pocket. That way, the nuyen trail did not lead back to her in any way. With most of my teams already on jobs, I set things up with the new team. They should be able to handle it. Joanne and I would meet the team and provide the pertinent details. I set it up for the next morning at a place I knew well, the Fairview Slopes. So I set this meet up with the new team and what the frag, Rae tried to negotiate the terms. I was so fraggin embarrassed after I said how sensitive this was and that the Johnson was a close personal friend. The others seemed willing to handle this without negotiating, but this will need to be something that I remember. They agreed to the job and went to work.

Now I normally keep my eyes and ears to the shadows when my teams are working and this was no different. They went about this pretty efficiently and found a possible location on where Zoe might be. Apparently along the way, Rae met up with Pwoner … What y’all may not know is Pwoner is a heavy set troll stripper that runs with the Shooters. I would have loved to have a flyspy drone on the wall when that smug elf met up with her. It seems they may have also found another location of interest, which is the library over on Woodstock. Now back in the days of the fifth world, this was actually a library with physical books and drek. Now its a shelter and soup kitchen for the homeless. I am not sure what interest they have there, but it was one of the last known addresses that was listed in Sniffer’s dossier.

So currently, at last check, Walker and Skitz were monitoring the apartment complex out in Sandy that they suspect has Zoe. The rest of the team split to rest up and prepare for the rescue.

Session 1.5 — Jackrabbit Gift Basket

This was a mini-run in response to events that happened in Session 1.

Cast of Characters

  • Rae
  • Bowjack

There I was. Minding my own business … literally. I was on a customer call at Celebrate It! when there was a crash out front. I ran to the window to see a truck smash into my Jackrabbit! I was like, Holy Drek! I ran out the door, just as this scrawny looking elf was putting a note on my window. I yelled out, but he just looked at me, jumped back in his truck and took off! What the frag, man. It said “Taco Truck” on the side as it left. I was able to get the license plate from the security footage and was able to get a pretty decent image of the elf that did it, along with another that was in the passenger seat. I filed the police report as a hit and run and filed the claim with the insurance company. That was on Friday.

Well today is Monday, and you would not guess what happened. HE CAME BACK! I was so shocked, I had to do a double take. Honestly, I was taken aback a little since he was pretty cute. He, and another elf that looked like an actor from old trid videos from the fifth world. I felt faint as something washed over me. They asked what they can do for me. First thing I said was that they can replace my car. They destroyed it after all. The cute one sorta when ballistic and tried throwing a chair through the window, after I recognized him I locked the doors so they couldnt leave. It was kinda cute, the way he lobbed it. The other one and I started talking about replacing my car. I gave them 5 hours to get me a new car and bring it back or I was going to the cops with the footage of them in my office.

I went about my day, not expecting them to come back, but they did! A few hours later, they delivered a new Jackrabbit to me. It was newer than mine and my favorite color! I ran out to them and they handed it over. The trid elf wasnt with him this time, but another one was. He was kinda cute, but I already had my eye on the scrawny looking one with the cute eyes. He did a final check of the engine and I made my move. I told the cute one that he can take me to dinner tomorrow night. I gave him my address and stuff and he said he would see me the next night. We went out and had a nice dinner, we talked about different things and stuff. It was a nice date. Later this week, he is taking me out to the movies. Cant wait!
