Session 5 — Have You Ever Seen The Rainne

Today’s Session Dates: February 10, 2075

  • Edgar

When the earth stopped shaking, Tors and Kish surveyed the area for damage. There was a little damage as the earthquake was not very big. However, there was some slight structural damage to nearby buildings. At the NEST, the house projects had a little more damage. Part of the building had some walls and floors collapse and blew out some windows. However, it seemed that this part was empty and nobody was hurt. The shaking seemed to not faze Edgar as he tried in vain to rub out the body damage from earlier that night.

Both Tors and Kish’s commlinks buzzed. It was a message from Rainne … however, it was not Rainne. The message had an image of her tied to a chair. She was bruised, battered and beaten.

We have your dear little friend here and will kill her if you do not stop your aggression against our interests.  Compensation must be made in the sum of 50,000 nuyen for your unprovoked assault on our many assets.  This should be put on a secured credstick and delivered to my associate in Shaw Park in 1 hour.  How does the saying go?  Oh, yeah … Rainne, Rainne will go away and never to return.

It was then that Kish noticed Rainne’s motorcycle where she normally parks it. This day has begun to completely spin out of control.

The team discussed a plan on what they should do. The got a hold of Daiquiri Jack and discussed the situation with him. The fixer was upset about the abduction of one of his runners. Their original plan was to get a fake credstick, but it was too short of time to acquire one. QJ ponied up a credstick with the 50k on it with the caveat that they dont lose it. There was only a little bit of time left, so they had to get the plan in motion.

Tors disguised himself to look like Daiquiri Jack, with the assistance of Kish. He figured that he had enough clout that it may be enough to convince the kidnappers, whom they assumed were the Fitzgerald gang, that they made a mistake messing with his team.

Kish would be waiting in the van nearby, in case things went south.

Edgar would take up a high vantage point and provide overwatch with his drones. He could also control the van remotely and get Kish to the action quickly. He also changed out the ammunition in the van’s mounted grenade launcher to use flash bangs.

Daiquiri Jack remained behind, but was connected to Tors through comms and his shared image link. QJ would be able to hear and see all that was happening.

The plan was in place and they moved on Shaw Park. They expected to see the shadowrunner Mutt or other Fitzgerald gangers, however, Tors was met by a human dressed in a business suit and carrying a submachine gun. He was sitting on a park bench as he approached. The associate held up a commlink that showed a live stream, in AR, of Rainne. The gun adept was bound and gagged to a chair. Tors requested proof of life before proceeding. The associate spoke something, which QJ translated from Russian and “slap her”. The AR feed showed a mysterious stranger step from off camera and strike Rainne with a the butt of an assault rifle. She screamed in pain.

Tors tried to intimidate the associate and delay as the other two looked for signs of where Rainne was, however, it resulted in the associate getting more violent. The AR feed again showed a mysterious stranger. This time, he reached forth and pulled Rainne’s hand out and tore the nail of her trigger finger with a rusty pair of pliers. The scream from her sent shivers down those that watched.

With no other choice, and concern that this was escalating beyond their control, Tors handed over the credstick with the nuyen. The associate checked the credstick and confirmed that the funds were there. He stated that Rainne will be released soon and began to leave. He headed across the park, opposite where the van was parked and regardless of the intimidation from Tors, and got into a black Americar. As the car pulled away, Edgar had his drones follow it as the van picked them up and followed.

A few moments after the car left, QJ reported that Rainne was returned outside of the NEST.

The car headed west away from the park and, after a short time, pulled into the fenced area of an old middle school. It seems that the school was modified into some sort of fortress. There were armed guards, wearing business suits, all over. On buildings around it were more guards, but they had some heavier hardware. A closer look and QJ identified them as members of the Nikitovich Vory Syndicate. Not being able to do anything currently, they decided to retreat and decided on their next move. Surveillance was put in place and the team fell back to the NEST. Rainne was in a room in the community center. She was severely injured and connected to a medkit. This cannot go unpunished …

Session 4 — Roller Skates and Buckets

  • Introducing … Edgar

The Johnson had just left. Tors and Kish were looking over the route of the shipment when Rainne disappeared. She silently excused herself and left the community center. Moments later, an individual named Edgar showed up. This was the rigger that the team needed to complete the job. After some quick introductions, the trio worked out an action plan to hijack the shipment. They only had a few hours to get set up, Rainne was still not here and messages were getting unanswered. They had to proceed without her.

Edgar sent out some of his drones to keep an eye out on the route for when the truck passes. The truck was disguised as an ACME ice cream truck and with the image they were provided as the Johnson left, they should be able to find it. The spot they decided to ambush it was nearby, but on the other side of Fitzgerald territory. The route followed along the I-696 and there was a point where it got off and onto Dequindre Rd and would continue alont 10 mile road. The was directly along the edge of the gang’s territory and the point where it was decided the most likely place they would attempt to hijack. Drones were placed around here to monitor and all there was to do now was to pick up some supplies from the Stuffer Shack that was just down the street from the target area.

The trio exited the community center and found Edgar’s vehicle. A silver family minivan, complete with a car seat, assorted toddler snacks and toys scattered about and a stick-family decal on the back window. Edgar needed to pick up a bucket of nails and screws and while there, Tors picked up a pair of vintage roller skates, helmet and pads that had a lightning bolt motif. The offramp that the route marked was where they headed next. Tors dumped out the bucked of screws and nails they got from the Stuffer Shack while Edgar deployed the oil sprayer. This late at night and the area they are in, collateral damage from this should be kept at a minimum. After leaving, they headed back to the NEST to wait.

The new rigger was able to spot the truck through the lookout drone that was the farthest away. The team had roughly 15 to 20 minutes to act, so they headed towards the target area. Not wanting alert any gangers that they were intruding in their area, they tool a longer route around. Unfortunately, the route took longer and as they took the onramp on to the freeway, they came side to side with the hijacking in progress. The truck was leading with security officers firing on group of bikers. The bikers were wearing Fitzgerald colors. The minivan promptly stopped and positioned itself in case it needed to move. Kish fired out the window with his silenced gun and tagged the delivery truck with a tracker tag. They then waited for the firefight to get ahead of them and towards the ambush spot.

They kept behind them and as they approached the offramp, the delivery truck feinted. It made a last minute change and stayed on the freeway instead of getting off. Unfortunately for the gangers, two of the bikers failed to catch it and sped down the offramp. They hit the oil slick and began to lose control. Once the speeding bikes hit the nails and screws, the tires blew out. The bikes began to flip and threw their riders in a violent and horrific scene.

The other two bikers were able to stay with following the delivery truck. The security forces on the truck continued to fire at them through the gun ports in the back and the gangers were firing on the truck. While the reroute was unexpected, the minivan continued to follow.

Then, out of seemingly nowhere, a familiar looking black 4×4 burst out and plowed into the delivery truck. The truck veered off the freeway, through a parking lot and skidded to a stop as it hit the wall of the Stuffer Shack that they were just at. The bikers and two more gangers from the ruined 4×4 jumped on the security forces and took control of the delivery truck. The fled the Stuffer Shack and headed back towards the minivan and the boobytrapped offramp. However, Edgar had another idea.

He pulled a u-turn and positioned the minivan along the side of the freeway. The delivery truck was headed right towards the rear of the vehicle. Kish and Tors hop out, along with a pair of doberman drones, and take cover between the minivan and the barrier. Edgar launched a thermosmoke grenade and it began to smoke. To add to the picture, he turned on the minivan’s hazard lights. The two bikers were leading and the drones fired on them. The shots hit the bikes and the gangers were thrown off. Kish took an aimed shot at the tire of the delivery van in an attempt to stop it. The APDS round pierced the armored tire and caused it to blow out. The driver of the van lost control of it and it slammed into the side of the parked minivan. A silent, or not so silent, scream escaped Edgar’s mouth.

Tors started strapping on his new roller skates and padding while Tors moved around to the drivers side door of the truck. The window was slightly open and Kish fired a round through the window and into the drivers head. When he opened the door, the driver’s dead body fell out. The passenger was killed by the impact. The two gangers that were thrown from their bikes started to stir, but they were still dazed from the accident. Kish hopped into the driver side of the van while Tors swung around and opened the back of the van. There were two dead Ares security guards … and nothing else. This truck was supposed to have an arms shipment, but its empty.

Tors sent out a warning to the rest of the team as they began to hear the unmistakable whine of VTOL turbines. Ares threat response was headed right towards them. Tors flung the two ganger bodies from their previous encounter with them down by the van and Kish put the driver back in the seat. They, and the drones, got back into the van and began to fled. Another audible groan came from Edgar as the sound of metal scraping metal echoed through the minivan as it pulled away. They sped down the highway and got off at the same exit the chase began as a pair of Ares Ventures flew by. Moments later they were back at the safety of the NEST. From there, the trio was able to see one of the Ventures flying around the area and assumed the other has landed.

Edgar got out of the van to inspect the damage done by the crash and groaned some more. They stood there discussing the events and how to proceed. They were hired to hijack a shipment of weapons and ended up with an empty truck. Was this a decoy or just a trap? Did the Johnson know this or was his intel flawed? The team needs gathers their thoughts and began to plan their next move.

A Day Job … Sucks — Side Run

The night was just like any other night at the motel for Kish. However, this night, things got a little more dangerous. A small group of people came bursting through the door. A couple of them were pretty banged up and wounded. Kish and one of the other attendants quickly ushered them through the back and into a vacant room. Kish, with his hand on his pistol, scanned the area through the windows, but didnt see anything. A few hours later, a pair of Knight Errant detectives came in. They asked to see the guest registry as they were looking for a wanted individual. Kish, after pondering for a few on whether she should or not, let them view the registry. Not finding what they were looking for, Kish was shown an image of the individuals that were wanted for murder. Kish recognized the individuals as the ones he had helped earlier, however, stated that she had not seen them. Satisfied with her answer, the detective left an ARO business card with her.

Give me a call if you see this person.” Detective Mike Smithers said as he passed it over. Kish simply nodded and they left the building.

After the detectives left, Kish copied down the information from the ARO. Suspicious of what the business card could be, she promptly placed it in the drawer and left it there.

When her shift was up, she headed out the door and on home. The cold hit her a little harder than she expected, so she hiked up her armored jacked to help block the wind. That was when she caught a glimpse of the beat up, black Toyota Gopher at the corner. The four wheel drive was a little banged up and the paint was fading in parts, but that is not what caught her attention. Inside were three individuals that seemed to be watching her. However, they went about talking amongst themselves. Suspicious that she was being watched, possibly by Knight Errant for providing the assistance, Kish took a little longer to get home and was more cautious with the surroundings.

Everything seemed in order for the next few days as Kish met up with Rainne. She mentioned that she was looking for some personalized grips for her pistols and Rainne directed her to an arms dealer she knew. The dealer had Kish firmly grip a couple of polymer clay grips to get the personalization that was needed. It would take a few days to make them, so she went ahead and picked up some APDS ammo as well.

Kish was working another uneventful shift at the motel. Her mind was on the funeral tomorrow for CoyHawk. While she didnt really know the young mage, Kish had a tinge of remorse for the loss. At the end of her shift, she skated home. Guess her mind was on the funeral for most of the way, but a scuffling sound, muffled voices and a fleeting shadow broke her our of her reverie as she rounded the corner.

Then it hit her. A loud bang and something hitting her chest. The impact knocked the wind out of her momentarily. She quickly got back to her senses and seen a pair of gangers, dressed in Fitzgerald colors. One was kneeled down and pointing a shotgun at her, the other was standing just behind him with a finger pointed at her. Time itself seemed to slow to a crawl as the shotgunner cocked another round into the chamber and took aim. The other ganger pulled out an Ares Predator and moved it to aim at Kish. Anger at being shot bubbled over, but the reality of the situation cooled her response. Taking on two gangers, that got a drop on her, by herself was not favorable. Quickly, she pulled out a smoke grenade and dropped it at her feet. She let the momentum of the skates propel her further from them.

As time seemed to slip back into normal, she heard another shotgun blast. This time, the shot went wide and struck the wall next to her. However, the shot from the Ares Predator struck her in the lower leg. Luckily, her armored jacket took the brunt of the hit. It was still enough to cause her leg to slightly buckle. She easily regained control again and continued to flee. The smoke quickly filled the corner and masking her escape. She rounded a few more corners, flew across the street and was back home in the NEST. Her skates caught on the curb as she tried to slow down, which threw her to the ground in front of Rainne and Tors. She laid there for a few moments to recover. Rainne and Tors spot the trickle of blood from the bullet wound in her leg. They look at each other with a look of dismay and wondered what the frag happened.

Session 2 — Burn It Down!

Today’s Session Dates: February 3 to February 4, 2075

The tracker that Rainne had placed on the drug dealer pans out after a few days. The research and legwork from the tracker leads the team to believe that the storage facility for the Tempo drugs that are coming in is an old scrapyard near the old, abandoned stamping plant. The place was well within the gang’s territory and looked like a legitimate business by day. That Friday night, the team decides to post up outside of the scrapyard and see what they can find out. General recon of the place showed that there are multiple buildings within the walls. The outside walls were once, possibly, a chain link fence but has been reinforced with plywood, corrugated plastic compounds and iron plates. Rows of monowire are strung atop the fencing. Multiple guard towers were surrounding the perimeter. There was a huge main door at the front that would allow trucks of materials to enter and deposit loads of raw materials in piles, which would then be sorted. A second door is located on the side to allow the empty trucks to easily leave.

Sprint did some Matrix scouting and found the facility was well protected with sensors. There were mover drones in the compound moving materials from one location to another. Each of the guards had assault rifles and commlinks that were slaved to a moderate host. In fact, it seems that all the devices here were slaved to it. After the Matrix recon, Sprint remained on the park bench beneath a pile of papers and discarded blankets. He was waiting for another hand-off.

Meanwhile, Rainne and Tors were scouting out the areas around the facility. Rainne came upon an abandoned house near the rear that could possibly serve as a place to post up for more recon. However, there was a foreboding sense of danger. Instead, the adept hid near it and depended on the ultrasound sensor for protection. Tors was near the front when a truck pulled in. He spotted the guards scan the truck, but also another pair of guards inside with a very large black dog with red sunken eyes.

After a few hours, darkness falls and the traffic in and out of the scrapyard stops. Sprint spots one of the guards leave the scrapyard. He lit up a cigarette while pacing about. A few minutes go by and another person, wearing gang colors, walks up to the waiting guard. The two exchanged small talk for a bit. Then they each pass small packages to each other, then the ganger leaves the same way he arrived. Convinced this was the hand-off that he was waiting for, Sprint finds a commlink icon on the guard and tracks his movements in the facility. He had visited three of the buildings before resuming patrols. Tors spotted the ganger and recognized him as one of the Troll’s cronies from Shaw Park.

Kish has been posted up in a nearby abandoned house with CowHawk. She decided to scout the place on the Astral Plane to see if she could find anything. Kish promised that her body would be safe. The young mage fell limp and projected herself. She was able to identify the aura’s of the guards and of the beast that Tors spotted. There was also a beast spirit in the form of a junkyard dog present. Unfortunately, the young mage misjudged the situation. The spirit lunged and sunk its teeth deep in the mage’s leg. She screamed in pain and launched an attack of her own. Wanting to quickly dispatch this spirit and protect her team, she reached deep inside herself and cast a powerful spell. The bolt of magical energy struck true and caused the spirit to dissipate. After the spell was cast, the energy of the spell rebounded back towards CowHawk. The energy wafted around her as a mist that scratched and clawed at her body. The spell she casted was so strong that a black skull came out of the mist. The skull seemed to inhale the very essence of the mage, just before it buried itself in her chest. CowHawk dissipated and faded into the darkness.

Kish watched CowHawk’s limp body start to convulse. Blood poured out of scratches and tears that began to appear all over her body. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head as her chest collapsed on itself. Just as quickly as it started, CowHawk’s body suddenly went limp. Kish tried to find a pulse or some signs of life, but was unable to. The young shaman was dead. Realizing that their operation is at risk, Kish sent out a warning to the rest of the team.

The team does not know which building the drugs are in, and had no real plan of action, but Sprint acted quickly. Sprint had the remaining three members of the team meet in the rear of the facility on Rainne’s position. On his way over there, Tors heard the approach of a car. The Ford Americar was playing a classic from the Fifth World that he knew all to well. The sounds of “Don’t Stop Believing” blasted out of the car as it pulled up to the scrapyard. The guard that did the hand-off previously left and hopped into the car. Tors noted the details and identification on the car and proceeded to the rear.

In the Matrix, Sprint monitors one of the drones and causes it to accelerate into the wall in the rear. The drone slammed into the fencing and caused an opening to appear that would be big enough for the others to squeeze in. Unfortunately, this also garnered the guard’s attention as well. Quickly, the three outside the opening went into action … again with no real plan in place. Kish tossed a smoke grenade at the opening to cover their insertion and Rainne took a shot at one of the guards. The shot struck true, but was not enough to kill the target. The guard shouted out that he was shot and now everyone knew there was something going on.

Kish and Rainne prepare to go into the hole, when they hear a rumbling growl. Out of the smoke, a pair of bright red eyes appeared as the form of the hellhound came through. The rumbling growl came to a pitch that seemed to vibrate the ground around them. The two could feel it with every fiber of their being as the growl turned to terror. The two look at each other and start to run away. Tors shouted out to them in an attempt to calm them, but it was two late. The pair had already begun sprinting off. Sprint, during all this, monitored the Matrix but did not take any further action.

Now Tors was alone … well him and Mr Munnin of course and the hellhound. Mr Munnin spouted off that the puppy wanted to be cuddled, but it instead attacked Tors. The beast struck out with its jaws, but he easily dodged it. Now Mr Munnin was convinced that the puppy just wanted to play with them. In a weird twist, Tors confronted the hellhound and mimicked its posture. After a few minutes of back and forth, the hellhound turned on its previous masters. The guards fled in terror, allowing the team to seize the drugs from the warehouse.

Kish was able to locate materials to cause the warehouse, and the supply of Tempo, to burst into an inferno. Sprint grabbed a handful of doses first though. The team leaves the area and heads back to the NEST. Further research on the driver of the car revealed that the person’s name was Limonov Maximovich. Maximovich was an enforcer for a local Vory syndicate. While the link was weak at best, it was at least a direction to start. The team gets paid, including the negotiated bonus, and has some time off now. The syndicate has been here for years, albeit not very active, but why are they pushing Tempo in Detroit?

Session 1 — Some Assembly Required

These fraggin’ Fitzgerald crew is beginning to piss me off. They know the truce is to not go below 8 Mile and yet they do. Leviticus has pushed me to far. Furthermore, they dealers are getting more and more violent. Now, the rumors are that Leviticus has an arrangement with some underground entity to smuggle drugs into the area. Not just any drugs, but this tempo drek. Tempo is quickly becoming a plague everywhere. So now its time for me to push back. Now I don’t have the forces that Leviticus has, I do have some runners in my pocket that would work. Even have me some new blood that want to cut their teeth.

Now I am getting word of an attack nearby, so its time to strike back from the shadows. I am gathering a group of new, but talented, individuals that could do what needs to be done. I have received word that Leviticus and his crew are keeping his drek in some secret location. What I want the team to do is strike a blow against them and send them a message. They are to locate this secret storage facility and destroy their supply. I also want to know who their new supplier is. So I set up a meet down in the community center for tonight and giving these New Bloods a shot.

I waited in the room for them to arrive. I brought up the feed on the sensor in the hallway as they arrived, to get a sense of how they interacted. It didn’t look like there would be any conflicts and seemed to be a cordial meeting. Once they all arrived and were introduced to each other, I closed down the feed and unlocked the door, which caused it to go slightly ajar. As the group started coming into the room, my terminal beeped with an email notification. I quickly glanced at it and sighed to myself. “Drek …” I mumbled as they each took a seat. I will need to deal with that later.

I made the request to the team and we came to an agreement. A bonus from the negotiation was that they would quietly find out who the supplier is. Its going to cost me a little more than I expected, but it would be worth it as I don’t need any heat brought down on the NEST. After a few follow up questions, I excused myself from the conference room and left them to their discussions.

Rainne quietly, without saying much either, left the room and met up with a known contact at their gun range to discuss the gang. With this knowledge, the gun adept, went over towards the park.

The team made a plan to go into the Fitzgerald’s turf and see what they can find out. Based on what they know about the gang, they decide to rendezvous with each other at Shaw Park. The park is a known main hangout and they have semi-regular fights there. These fights are not exactly … regular, but happen a few times a month and are extremely violent.

The remaining members of the team break apart, but still within a short distance, and make their way to the park. Along the way, CoyHawk rounded a corner and ran right into a trio of Fitzgerald gangers. The shaman slyly avoided a direct conflict with them and slipped away. Thinking it would be best to avoid further conflict, she covered herself in an invisibility spell and met up with the others. They all met up at the park. The moment they each entered the park, they were filled with a sense of unknown rage, violence and pain. The members of the team that were Awakened immediately noticed that the park had a background count, likely due to the fights that were held here.

Tors decided it best to find the biggest and baddest person in the park and challenge them to a fight. He found Mutt, a 10ft musclebound troll with an assault rifle and full body armor. Mutt was flanked by a few members of his crew when Tors approached him. His first instinct was to strike out at this WeeMan, but instead felt the need to hear out his proposal. He did have a fight proposal, but it was for Kish and not himself. Kish, after sizing up the huge troll, determined that the foe was worthy and accepted the challenge. At first, they both thought of using their blades, but came to an unspoken agreement and dropped them. They were going to punch it out.

The two slugged it out, each holding their own against each other. Meanwhile, Tors was working the crowd trying to find out more about the troll. Sprint found a tree nearby and dropped into VR to assist with what he could. However, once he started poking around, he found that the troll was exceptionally protected. The only active device that the troll was running was a set of wired reflexes, but the concerning matter at hand was that it was protected by a cyberdeck. There was a decker nearby and if Sprint went about trying to hack the ‘ware, it could bring down some serious heat on the fledgling running team.

Once the two brutes beat on each other, the fighting stopped. It seems there was a mutual respect for each others skill and, despite the strong feelings of violence. However, the troll did invite Kish to the next fight club if she wanted to test her meddle. Afterwards, Tors notices that the troll partakes in some modern chemistry and the team decides to leave. Unfortunately, the fight club was days after their deadline for completing the job. They thought that they could find a dealer there that they could backtrack to the storehouse.

While all this was going on, Rainne wanted to take a bird nest position nearby. The highest point was the housing development towers at Lafayette Park. It was just the shell of what it used to be and has been overtaken by squatters and the homeless. The moment the building was entered, a sudden urge to throw came over Rainne. Able to push the feeling back, they pushed through and proceeded through the tenement. The scattered trash, feces, squaller and whatever was in the corner blurred by as Rainne pushed to the roof and fresh air. Once posted up, they surveyed the area for gangers that were dealing. It didnt take long to find a pair at the corner by the development. There wasnt a way to quickly get down on the outside, so Rainne went back through the building. Again, the urge the spew out stomach contents were suppressed.

When Rainne approached the dealers, they started pitching their product. However, before they would sell to a new person, they wanted Rainne to partake in the product first. After a hit of novacoke, the adept was able to acquire a few more doses of the drug, but more importantly, a tracking tag was placed on the dealer. Now the team can track the dealers whereabouts and determine where the warehouse was.

With the day’s activities complete and a good line on how to find the storage facility, the team regroups back at the NEST and plans their next moves.
